Say it With a Sandwich

A hero for your hero.

A hero for your hero.

When my hubby knows he’s in the dog house, he also knows exactly where he’s heading: the local flower shop, where we have an account (because admittedly, those flowers have graced our dining room table many a time). But what’s this gal to do when I’m the one who’s made a mistake and needs forgiveness? I’ve learned the hard way ladies. In fact, I tried buying him a bouquet years ago for a promotion – a celebratory occasion at that — and got that “huh, thanks, I guess?” response. Read More »

The Last Hurrah: White Jeans

White jeans

A trio of white jeans bid adieu to summer.

My girlfriends and I are milking this last bit of summer for all that it’s worth. There are a few more days until Labor Day, so it’s still legal to wear white. What does that mean? A white jeans party, of course. Even though we consider ourselves modern gals, not mired down by old-fashioned etiquette, it was a fun excuse to get together and celebrate our favorite summer pants. What to eat and drink? Read More »

An Unusual End-of-Summer Pesto

Kale Pesto

A Perfect Pesto from HealthyEats.com.

The perfect pesto is fresh basil, pine nuts, garlic, olive oil and a hearty dose of Parmesan cheese, right? Not necessarily. If you’re a home gardener (I wish!) or a farmers’ market regular (definitely!), snatch up a bunch of kale to try this unusual summer pesto, which we dollop on a crusty bread slices and top with fresh tomatoes. They Will Know You by Your Salad

Summer Salads

Spark salad envy with this portable, Asian dish.

There are a few more BBQ’s and potlucks on my summer schedule, and blissfully, I’m hosting none of them! All I have to do is grab my latest sundress, a bottle of vino and the perfect portable salad to share. Even if I’m not in charge of the main event, I still want my side dish to shine (I like being an attention stealer). Just in time, I found… Read More »

Summer Whites Under $10

whitewine_al

Shh, we drink these all year long.

Does this sound familiar? Eleven months of the year you’re all about red wine. Then summer hits, you crank up the fans and suddenly you can’t quite swallow those bold, heavy flavors. Thankfully Bacchus, our lovely god of vino, has given us lighter, crisper white wines to help with that.

Of course, all year is keep-it-cheap season for me, which is why I loved editing this list… Read More »

The Last Hurrah: Summer Apps

Crab Salad recipe from FineLiving.com

Crab Salad recipe from FineLiving.com

There was a moment the other night when it hit me — summer’s almost over. So I gathered every bit of fresh produce I had lying around (and ran out to the corner store for more) to cook a meal I can only savor for a few more weeks. Tomatoes, basil, squash, corn, blueberries, peaches and more will all disappear from our farm stands, local markets and grocery stores before we know it.  I joined a CSA this summer and it was off to a slow start due to all the rain in June.  But now it’s delivering with abandon and I can’t keep up! Design Star: Think About the Children

Storage for Kids' Rooms
Last year’s winner, Jennifer Bertrand, would have nailed this challenge.

On last night’s episode of HGTV’s Design Star, @#$! was booted off after failing to meet the judge’s expectations for a jazzy kid’s room design. (Didn’t want to spoil for you — David Bromstad spills it on his vlog.) I tend to agree with their decision, though to me, it didn’t seem like any of the remaining 5 had ever interacted with real, live human children. Read More »

Sudsy Fun: Root Beer Floats

Root Beer Float Recipe from RecipeZaar.com

Root Beer Float Recipe from RecipeZaar.com

These days, I tend to prefer my beer leaded rather than sweet and from an A&W can like I enjoyed as a kid. But add ice cream to the equation, and suddenly I warm up to the idea. Recently I went to my aunt’s house for dinner. When I say aunt, I don’t mean one who loves doilies and going to the ballet — this aunt is hip, hilarious, and most importantly, an excellent cook.

We had another amazing meal of seasonal and inspired dishes and then it came time for dessert: Read More »

Frozen Fix: Ice Cream Sandwiches

Middle Management: The ice cream can make of break the sandwich.

Middle Management: Tips for jazzing up ice cream for yummier sandwiches.

To say an ice cream sandwich is more than the sum of its parts is an understatement. Ever have a bowl of ice cream with cookies? It’s just that. But take those two cookies and sandwich them around the ice cream and you’ve got a dessert that is at once whimsical and over-the-top delicious. Plus, it’s much more fun to eat.

I like to use homemade cookies because a chewy cookie just works better for texture – you want to be able chomp and make teeth marks in your sandwich, not take a bite and have it crumble before you. Any old ice cream will work, but you can take the entire thing to the next level by rolling it in sprinkles, mini chocolate chips or nuts. Freeze the sandwiches on a cookie sheet until firm and serve whenever the time is right – about when you’re ready to hear cheers from a crowd.

Got a fun summertime dessert that can top these?

Cash for the Clunker in my Laundry Room

Green with envy over the Green Home's earth-friendley laundry room.

I'm green with envy over the Green Home's earth-friendley laundry room.

I’m not even kidding when I say I was literally just daydreaming about The Laundry Room of My Dreams, when I heard CNN’s Keira Knightly (like a voice from above) talking about the possibility of a federal Cash for Clean Laundry program. Okay, it’s not called that. But word on the street is that there is a new program in the works that might work like the Cash for Clunkers deal, but for appliances. You wouldn’t have to turn in your offensive, earth-destroying, old refrigerator. (You could just move it to the basement or the garage like my parents.) Sit tight though – state governments will decide how much you get and they don’t have to turn in their proposals to the feds until Oct. 15. Keep checking in at www.energy.gov. Do you realize that this could bring me one step closer to 4.0 cubic feet of front-loading happiness? What’s your next big appliance purchase going to be?
